For our next free CSA NSW Division webinar on Saturday November 21 we're delighted to be hosting a presentation by veteran digital colourist and educator Edi Walger (Argentina) on Using Augmented Reality to Teach Colour Science.  Registration is now open for Colour Society of Australia members and any remaining places will be open to non-members from November 7.

Augmented reality makes it possible to visualize three-dimensional illustrations and graphs that escape the limitations of the flat, two-dimensional character of conventional book and screen presentations. Colour science is a deeply interdisciplinary field that requires bridging cognitive science, physiology, physics, mathematics, geometry, and colour theory and so involves a multitude of concepts that can benefit from augmented reality presentation.

To make these complex topics more accessible for teachers and self-directed learners, Edi Walger’s new book Questbook of Colorimetry (2026) leverages augmented reality to allow students to engage in STEAM-focused activities, creating an active learning environment that supports diverse educational needs. This immersive experience is expanded by its companion app, Karnal, which addresses multiple learning styles. Karnal caters to auditory learners through text-to-speech features and enhances kinaesthetic learning through interactive 3D elements and virtual reality compatibility. By transforming devices into dedicated bridges for learning, the platform boosts student motivation and delivers a personalized, multi-sensory pace of study.

Join us as Edi demonstrates how he has used augmented reality to illustrate a vast range of topics, including basic concepts in mathematics, physics, optics, physiology and cognitive science, classic psychophysical tests and experiments, colour naming, modern and historical colour order systems, additive and subtractive technologies, spectral analysis of light and spectral reflectances of objects, anatomy of the eye, colour vision deficiencies, chromatic adaptation, colour constancy and colour management.

Edi Walger is an Argentinean Patagonia-born color science popularizer, visual effects and post-production supervisor, and veteran colorist. Grounded in an academic background that spans fine arts, animation, music, and philosophy, his expertise is backed by over 36 years of professional experience across digital disciplines—including traditional animation, motion graphics, 3D animation, visual effects, and software development. Throughout his career, he has founded the VFX boutique La Posta, contributed to software development and technical documentation for SGO Mistika, and served as a workflow consultant and post-production supervisor for Netflix and Amazon Original productions.

As a dedicated educator and international consultant, Edi leads corporate training programs for major global companies and delivers extensive lectures on colour theory, colour science, ACES, HDR, colour grading, DIT workflows, digital cinematography, compositing, and VFX. He is the founder of the PuntoCINE Argentina school and Editorial y Talleres en Contacto in Mexico, the latter of which specializes in professional digital cinema courses. Additionally, he reaches industry professionals across Spain and Latin America through online masterclasses via his platform ColorDoctor.

Attendance is free but limited to 100 places world-wide and registration by midnight AEDT on November 19 is essential. Successful registrants will be notified by return email and will receive the Zoom link by email shortly before the event. Bookings are open now for Colour Society of Australia members and any remaining places will be available to non-members from November 7. Please do not register if you don't plan to attend live; a recording of the webinar will be publicly available on the CSA YouTube channel for a limited time after the event, and will remain available to CSA members via the CSA website.

Finally, please see below for our free in-person end-of-year event on Saturday December 5, when the Manly Art Gallery & Museum has invited us to join them at their Artists in Conversation event in association with the Chromatic Luminosity exhibition, which opens on December 4. Bookings have just opened at the link shown.
